The Sunworn Ranger

One of the most challenging subclasses I’ve built - the Sunworn Ranger. It’s available now in the shop and available for free to patrons of the Spud Club during October. Challenging? What do I mean by that? Well, I knew I wanted a sun-themed subclass option to mirror my beloved Moonchaser Ranger, but I also knew I didn’t want to just do fire fire fire. Now, there is a little fire in there, but we’re focusing on heat, exhaustion, mirages and similar effects. I’ve also tried to reflect this direction with a list of spells. Imagine Tony Stark wandering the desert in Iron Man 1 and that sense of heat stroke or desperation. I hope this vibe sounds good to y’all. I’m just happy to have these twin subclasses.

Overview

Sunworn rangers are experienced with the brilliant beauty and overwhelming power of the sun. Learning to tame the brutal might of the harsh, fiery sun represents a deep understanding of nature’s oppressive capabilities. Common among desert-dwelling communities, individuals with an astrological passion and survivalists, the path of a Sunworn ranger brings great gifts to its adherents.

While the exhaustion, confusion and pain of an overbearing summer sky at high noon are easily assigned to the image of the sun, so is the healing feeling of warm light on your cheek on a chilly autumn morning. Sunworn rangers are a varied group of people with frequent tendencies to harsh, pragmatic attitudes but include individuals of all sorts. Just as their abilities mirror their spells, they are more than just a fireball.

3rd-level Sunworn feature

Mighty foes wilt under a summer sun. If a creature hits you with a melee attack, you can use a reaction to force the creature to make a Constitution saving throw. If it fails its saving throw, the creature gains disadvantage on attack rolls, ability checks and saving throws until the end of its next turn.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
